There are places in the American West that make you feel small, and then there is Dead Horse Point. Standing at the edge of the overlook, with the Colorado River curling through thousands of feet of red rock below, it feels as though you have climbed to the roof of the desert.
For Robert Fuerer, the country around Moab has always been irresistible. Arches, Canyonlands, and Dead Horse Point offer an endless vocabulary of color, distance, and stone. In Carved by the Colorado, the pleasure came from following those layers deeper and deeper into the landscape, drawing each mesa, cliff, and canyon wall as they slowly dissolved into the blue-violet atmosphere of the distance.
The desert is anything but brown. Warm oranges collide with crimson rock, cool shadows slip into violet and blue, and the Colorado cuts through it all like a green ribbon. Capturing that progression of color and atmosphere was one of the great joys of making this painting.
The day itself supplied a little extra drama. While Robert was painting near the overlook, a group of BASE jumpers suddenly launched themselves illegally from the cliffs nearby. One moment there was silence and canyon air, the next, figures were dropping into the immense space below. It was an unforgettable jolt of adrenaline in an already breathtaking place.
What Robert loves most about this painting is the sense that a little of that vastness remains trapped inside it: the heat, the atmosphere, the impossible scale, and that extraordinary feeling of standing above the Colorado with canyon country stretching toward the horizon.
