Mount Olympus is one of those subjects that seems to reinvent itself depending on where you stand in the Salt Lake Valley. Shift a few miles north or south and the profile changes, the ridgelines rearrange themselves, and suddenly the mountain feels almost unfamiliar.
For Mount Olympus Aflame, Robert Fuerer took a small liberty with the view. From his vantage point in the park, the mountain’s distinctive second hump was largely hidden. But after living in Holladay for years, where that double-humped silhouette rises so prominently above the neighborhood, he chose to bring it back into the composition. It is part observation, part memory, and part affection for the mountain’s unmistakable character.
That familiarity has not dulled the subject. Quite the opposite. Fuerer has painted Mount Olympus from life at least two dozen times, returning again and again to its changing light, weather, color, and shape. Here, the mountain catches the warmth of the setting sun, turning its rocky face into a sweep of oranges, violets, and deepening blue shadow.
For an artist who knows Olympus this well, the challenge is not simply to record it. It is to discover it again.
